Discover the Garh Mata Trek, a spiritual and scenic trail in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, leading to the centuries-old Garh Mata Temple (Devi Chamunda), nestled at ~2,940 m between Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir. Approachable from Salooni, Kihar, Telka or from Bani, the trail winds through lush meadows, offers breathtaking views of the Pir Panjal range, and hosts the vibrant annual Garh Mata Jatar Mela. Though the temple isn’t fully road connected, the rewarding journey on foot gives you serenity, panoramic vistas, and authentic Himalayan culture. Best visited in summer & early autumn.

Garh Valley (Garh Mata Trek Salooni)

Located about 65 km from Chamba town, Bharmour is a picturesque and spiritual destination often called the Land of Gods (Shiv Bhumi). Once the ancient capital of Chamba, Bharmour is famous for its Chaurasi Temple Complex, which houses 84 ancient shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities. The town is also the base for the sacred Manimahesh Yatra, leading to the holy Manimahesh Lake, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Himachal Pradesh.

Chhatrari Temple

Located about 45 km from Chamba town, the Chhatrari Temple, also known as the Shakti Devi Temple, is one of the most ancient and revered temples in Himachal Pradesh. Built in the 7th century by King Meru Varman, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Chhatrari Devi) and is a remarkable example of early Himalayan wooden architecture.

The main idol of Goddess Shakti, crafted from ashtadhatu (an alloy of eight metals), is believed to have been sculpted by the legendary artist Gugga, who also created the famous Manimahesh idol. Surrounded by scenic hills and traditional wooden houses, Chhatrari offers both divine peace and a glimpse into the rich heritage of Chamba Valley.

Every year, during the Manimahesh Yatra, pilgrims visit this temple to seek blessings before continuing their journey to Manimahesh Lake.

Sural Valley Pangi
